This was one of those funny jetlag moments. Last night, I returned to Beijing from a week at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco. As I was tweaking my Leopard install just now, I realized that I needed to enable root but then realized that the NetInfo tool is gone which is where I typically enabled root. I never really considered what the tool did so in my effort to enable things, I poked around sshd configs and the new .plists which replaced NetInfo. Then I had a “oh duh” moment….

(hint…for students, it’s best create groups in OD based upon graduation year so you aren’t modifying thousands of students each each year).

1. Navigate though the Administration—>Site configuration area to the LDAP Groups area.
2. You will see your existing LDAP conection.
3. Click ‘edit’
4. Scroll down the page and click the checkbox that says….


"Groups exist as LDAP entries where a multivalued attribute contains the members' CN"

5. Ensure the fields are filled in according to the example below

Viola!!! You’ve now told Drupal how to associate groups with users. But this is only the first part. We need to map the user’s OpenDirectory ‘groups’ to Drupal ‘roles’.

Mapping Groups to Roles

Now we are going to edit some code. Mount the folder containing your Drupal instance and navigate to the the ‘ldap_integration’ file inside the LDAP_Integration module’s folder.

1. Go to the LDAP_Integration module’s config folder.

DRUPAL_ROOOT/sites/all/modules/ldap_integration/ldap_integration

2. Open “ldapgroups.conf.php” file with a text editor of your choice.

3. Look for the $GLOBALS[’ldap_group_role_mappings’] variable which starts about 14-15 lines down the page. You will see an example of how you map a role name to a group DN. Delete the example if you choose and follow this example…

Now, this assumes that I have already set up roles in Drupal with names like staff etc. Your groups and mapping names will be different though it should be fairly obvious from the example how to customize this to your environment.

Drupal 5.1 with OpenDirectory - HOWTO Part 1/2

I’m shaking in my seat right now…not due to any medical conditions, but because we just wired our Drupal portal to OpenDirectory on OSX Server for group-to-role mapping. This is huge because you can have a portal that, let’s say, delivers student-specific content to students and staff-specific content to staff. It’s functionality that I’ve wanted for a long time but after a failed attempts in a prior versions of Drupal, I simply back-burnered it because it wasn’t really necessary at that particular time.

I should clarify that authenticating Drupal against OD was piece of cake. And doing group mappings was something probably doable but not very obvious/easy/intuitive. The new LDAP plugin for 5.1 really helps.

This will be a very high-level howto. I’m assuming you have an OSX Server, a copy of Drupal running against MySQL, with your PHP extensions etc. I’m also assuming you know how to do some Drupal-specific tasks like intall modules etc. I’d highly recommend the entropy.ch build of PHP which provides a comprehensive number of pre-compiled goodies and lib references. You definately need Drupal 5.1 and the LDAP_integration module.

Let’s get started…

Install and Activate LDAP_Integration
1. Install the ldap_integration module in /sites/all/
2. Activate the ldapauth and ldapgroups modules in the Modules admin area.

Configure LDAP Server
1. Go to the “LDAP Integration” tool in the Sote Configuration menu
2. Click the “Configure LDAP Server” link.
3. Set the following settings….

Name:  my ldap server
LDAP Server:  ldap.myhost.edu
LDAP Port: 389
Use Start-TLS:  <leave blank for now>
Store passwords in encrypted form: <leave blank for now>

Configure Authentication
1. On the same page as the configuration, there’s a disclosure triangle and link for configuring “Login procedure”. Click it.
2. Enter the following with your appropriate modifications….


Base DNs:  cn=users,dc=odm,dc=myschool,dc=edu
UserName attribute:  uid
Email attribute: mail

Now, log out of Drupal and log back in using the username and credentials from OpenDirectory. Does it work?

Troubleshooting Authentication (skip if you can login)

1. ssh into your friendly OpenDirectory server
2. Add ‘bind_v2′ to ‘/private/etc/openldap/slapd.conf’ beneath the includes
