I’m writing this from the internet terminals at the hotel. I woke up to an SMS message from my counterpart in China asking if we were ok? I replied “why?” and he informed me of the terrorist attack here last night. So this is to let everyone else know we are ok.

Scarily, this happened in an area between our hotel and restaurant…not too far from where we were having dinner with another US family from Beijing whose daughters go to school with Maddy.

This also explains why our service at dinner practically halted and put us out onto dark, deserted streets at 10pm on a Saturday night and couldn’t find a cab. The streets were filled with local Balinese but there wasn’t a single westerner. The first two westerners we saw were crying but we just assumed they were having a tough night. We clearly sensed something was wrong.

Now I’m feeling a little angry because the vibe this morning is so crappy that it’s going to be hard to get into the “have-fun” spirit. I would have much rather posted about the incredible time were having with our snorkeling trip, the visits to the temples, the great restaurants, and the sunset fire-dance at the Ulu Watu temple.

I’ll try to post an update later. Damn terrorists.
